The Houston Astros are off to a great start and the news gets better as the franchise owns two of the first five picks in the amateur draft. With the second overall pick, the latest mocks have the front office looking to add a front line starting pitcher, hopefully someone that can make a quick transition to the big leagues.
U.C. Santa Barbara sensation Dillon Tate was one of the best performers for Team USA last year and despite playing just a couple of games this season, looks to have the stuff on the mound any team would want. With a mid-90s fastball and a nasty slider, he could develop into a closer, but he will get his shot at starting games before any team moves him into the bullpen.
Houston also owns the fifth overall pick and Michael Matuella of Duke could be their choice. At 6’7″ and three quality pitches, he possesses an intimidation factor that can’t be coached and could become the cornerstone of the franchise over the next decade.
Brady Aiken was the top overall selection of the 2014 MLB Draft, but after failing to sign with Houston, he sat out this past year. The bad news for the youngster was an injury that occurred earlier this year and that will see the lefty drop in the player rankings. Despite his arm injury, Aiken is still likely to hear his name called in the first round with Boston and the NY Yankees most likely to take a chance with the 18-year-old.
Teams differ in opinion when it comes to the early rounds, some like the experience of college players, while others go for high school talent they can develop, but no matter what team picks these youngsters in June, they will take the first step in becoming the next stars of the game and with some luck, could find themselves in the Hall of Fame when finished with their careers.
