article imageStudy: Incredible ocean discovered near the center of the Earth

By Walter McDaniel     Jun 13, 2014 in Science
Evanston - Researcher Steven Jacobsen claims to have found evidence of an incredibly huge reservoir of water near the center of the earth.
Northwestern University Researcher Steven Jacobsen and his team claim to have found a massive reservoir of water deep underneath the earth. He used 2,000 seismometers to study quakes around the world. He measured the speed of waves and found out that they were likely passing through water.
With this new finding he studied the Earth at 700 kilometers (around 434 miles) down from the surface. He and his team found that the water is trapped in a rock called ringwoodite which lies in the mantle. The massive heat and pressure nearby keeps the water compressed.
For geology this gives us a new understanding of how water interacts with our Earth as a whole. For biology there could be new microorganisms to discover. Even for astronomy we may have discovered that we should be looking towards the core instead of just on the surface for astral water sources.
The findings were quickly published in periodicals around the world including on New Scientist. We should note that discovering something and gathering samples are two very different things. We will need further studies done and material gathered before we can confirm these findings here. Still it is an amazing and promising discovery if it turns out to be true.
