Breathtakng drone video shows 2,000 beluga whales in Arctic

Beluga whale party

Taken last summer near the small town of Resolute, or Resolute Bay, CBC reporter Sima Sahar Zereh obtained the video from the man who shot it, Nansen Weber, whose family, Zereh writes, “has been coming to the Arctic for three generations” and is adamant that the Arctic must not be altered by human activity.

“I think it’s important that people know that pristine places like this beluga place, is one of a kind in the world,” Weber told Zereh. “It’s something that we should look into and hopefully save, because it might not be there in the future.”

Despite his having seen whales many times, he said he got a lesson from his video. “This drone actually allowed me a new perspective of seeing what they’re doing,” he said. “You can clearly see all the mothers and calves. You can see rubbing. They’re just having a huge party.”

Weber spoke of the challenges of making such a video and said they were two-fold. The first is the challenge of being out in the elements “hundreds of kilometres from anything” without anyone to help should you get in trouble. You have to be able to fend entirely for yourself, he said.

Challenge of Arctic

And Weber encountered an additional challenge from the prospective of the technology he used. He said the first drones could not take the conditions of the Arctic, the extreme cold and powerful winds, and it took him years and many attempts — and drone crashes — to get the results he did.

The result is truly wonderful, with the two-and-a-half minute video he shared showing breathtaking landscape and a colourful ocean. He captures belugas in singles and pairs and by the many dozens and his description of them engaged in a party is an apt one.

With an artistic flair, Weber’s video puts together a stunning story that gives viewers a look at beluga whales as they’ve never been seen before.
