article imageScientists discover massive earth-like planet

By Walter McDaniel     Jun 3, 2014 in Science
A recent news release from the Harvard-Smithsonian Center announced the discovery of a planet similar to but massively larger than the earth. This amazing find is shaking up the scientific world.
The similarities come from the fact that both our own planet and the newly discovered planet known as Kepler-10c have rock formations.
So why is this so stunning to scientists? The area in which it is located and the very fast orbit speed suggest that it should not be there at all. Indeed by our current laws of astrophysics this should have been impossible. However it is there still and opens up some amazing venues for scientific studies.
The process itself should have also taken "billions of years" according to the Harvard-Smithsonian Press Release. Many scientists are now speculating that with rocky formations comes life which can spring up from those very formations. It will likely take many years more of study to find out if there is or there was any life on Kepler-10c.
If it really was formed in a short time then our understanding of the lifespan of the universe may also be incorrect. While it would still have existed for several billion years it may have been around for far shorter of a time than many scientists previously thought. This point also needs a deeper study before anything is confirmed though.
All of these findings are tentative at the moment so we cannot exactly call this "Hard News" but the real news is that it opens up a whole new world of scientific possibilities in the study of space.
