The plague does not bode well for farmers in the region who fear total devastation of their crops.
"We're talking about 700 square kilometres (270 square miles) affected by the plague in the municipalities of Tizimipan and Telchac, among others," said Mario Poot from the Campaign Against Locusts in Yucatan.

The locusts are congregating in the area in order to reproduce. A single pair is believed to be able to
reproduce up to 200,000 locusts. A similar siege last year destroyed 400 hectares of corn crops and other plantations for human and livestock consumption.
