Fabulous savings

A Toronto business is taking charge in the competitive Internet marketing arena by getting their clients top placement in search engines and offering clients' customers discounts.

FabulousSavings.com, which began in 1999, has helped more than 1,200 Toronto-area companies alone.

Big chains like Wal-Mart and Best Buy rely on the company to find them customers, as do small and medium-sized business.

"We're not throwing out spam emails, these are all people looking for things that our clients have," says founder and chief strategist Michael Yack.

"It's 40,000 to 50,000 very, very highly targeted traffic visitors a day."

FabulousSavings gets its clients at or near the top of Internet searches by writing site descriptions in a clear, concise way that work well with search engines, Yack says.

For example, typing "hummer limos Toronto" into Google retrieves Exotic Limousine Service Toronto, a FabulousSavings client, as the first choice.

Typing "men's suits Toronto" did the same with Tom's Place, and "windows and doors Toronto" landed FabulousSavings clients in the third and fourth spots.

"This is clicks-to-bricks, that we capture them online and we send them into their retail locations," says Yack.

Once visitors find the FabulousSavings client, they are also offered the incentive of online coupons.

Yack began his business as a personal site telling friends where to find deals in Toronto. Since then, his company has expanded beyond Canada.

In fact, Harvard University now offers a course to teach students how to manipulate search engines the way his company does.

Last month, FabulousSavings won the innovative affiliate of the year award at LinkShare's awards gala in New York.
