Mayweather has recently decided to come out of retirement to face MMA king Conor McGregor in a boxing match. McGregor has already affixed his signature in the fight contract but Mayweather has yet to sign and finalize the deal. The parties have already announced the venue which is the T.Mobile Arena in Las Vegas Nevada. The exact date is yet to be announced.
Mayweather said there is a 90 percent chance the fight will happen.
"The only fight that makes sense to me is the McGregor fight. I guess I have one more obstacle that I have to get over. When we make a move it's going to be huge. When Floyd Mayweather fights, it's history," he said.
Mayweather, who saw his fighter Gervonta Davis demolished Liam Walsh in London said he will confer with adviser Al Haymon when he gets back to the US.
"If I do fight, there's a 90 per cent chance it's against Conor McGregor. When I get back to the US I'll call Al Haymon and see our next move. There's no rush. The only thing I am chasing is my own records. And I mean pay-per-view records,"he added.
In his Facebook post, De la Hoya claims the looming Mayweather-McGregor clash isn't good for boxing because McGregor isn't in the level of Mayeather when it comes to boxing as he has never boxed competitively at any level.
De la Hoya said: "2017 has started off as a banner year for boxing. Joshua vs. Klitschko; Thurman vs. Garcia; Golovkin vs. Jacobs; Canelo vs. Chavez. All four of these fights – and many more – have brought the fight game back and reinvigorated interest from the ever-elusive casual fan."
"But if you thought Mayweather/Pacquiao was a black eye for our sport – a matchup between two of the best pound-for-pound fighters that simply didn’t deliver – just wait until the best boxer of a generation dismantles someone who has never boxed competitively at any level – amateur or professional," he added.
De la Hoya said he isn't voicing his opinion because he is promoting the upcoming Alvarez-Golovkin fight but he is concerned about the health of boxers when they are matched with high level opponents.
Mayweather is unbeaten when he retired two years ago and is considered the best boxer in the world. Facing McGregor, who hasn't fought as a professional boxer is what de la Hoya is concerned about. More so he is convinced the only motivation for the proposed fight is money.
De la Hoya believes the fight would be a disaster and the fans certainly do not deserve it.
