Review: Ingrid Michaelson exceptional on new EP 'Alter Egos'

Singer-songwriter Ingrid Michaelson is one of a few artists who can do no wrong no matter what she releases. Her new EP "Alter Egos" is an absolute delight.

It opens on a haunting note with the piano-driven "Whole Lot of Heart," where she is joined by Tegan and Sara. In the ballad "I Remember Her," Michaelson pays a moving homage to her late mother, and the listener ought to have the Kleenex box handy. The inclusion of Lucius on the latter nostalgic tune (and their atmospheric harmonies), helps elevate it to a higher, more spiritual level. It is haunting, delicate, controlled and heartbreaking, all at the same time. Anybody who ever lost a loved one could easily relate to its bittersweet lyrics.
It is followed by "Drink You Gone," where she collaborates with John Paul White, and her "Miss America" duet with Sara Bareilles is simply mesmerizing. It closes on a more uplifting note with the liberating "Celebrate," with sibling trio AJR.
Alter Egos is available on iTunes.
The Verdict
Overall, Alter Egos is another bold and powerful musical effort by Ingrid Michaelson. It is a raw, authentic and an honest collection, where she is not afraid to display her vulnerability as a recording artist. This EP garners an A rating.
