In her "Rebel Heart" tour stop in Houston, Texas, the "Material Girl" sang "Rebel Rebel" in his honor, and prior to that she gave a sentimental speech in Bowie's memory.
Madonna praised him for being a genius in the music industry, as well as one of the best singer-songwriters of the 20th century. He would change her life when she went to see him in concert in Detroit, her first concert ever. As a result of that live David Bowie experience, Madonna realized it was fine to be different, and she called him "the first Rebel Heart" that she "laid eyes on."
She discussed the great impact Bowie had on her life via a lengthy post on her official Facebook page.
Madonna was the artist that gave the introductory speech for Bowie's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. While he was not there in person, she subsequently accepted the award on his behalf.
