As the NHL season heads into the first week of action in 2016, several teams are playing their best hockey of the year, including the top franchise in the league, Washington.

The Capitals are 9-1-1 over their last 11 games, leading the league with 59 points and well on their way to home ice advantage when the Stanley Cup Playoffs roll around. Washington is also on the radar with Alex Ovechkin just four goals shy of the 500 mark, just another reason to watch this squad in the coming week.
Los Angeles didn't start the year on the right track, but the Kings are among the best hockey clubs over the last two months and with five straight wins and now leading the Pacific Division, this team is climbing the latest power rankings, sitting third overall and tops in the Western Conference.
Second in the latest rankings is Florida as the Panthers continue to play great hockey. With nine straight wins, this team has taken over the top spot in the Atlantic Division and looking like a hockey club that could win back-to-back championships.
The top squad in the Western Conference is Dallas and with a 16-4-0 mark at home, the Stars will be tough to beat come playoff time. With 60 overall points, they hold an eight point advantage over Los Angeles and with their continued strong play, a sure bet to host at least two rounds, if not more when the playoffs start later this year.
With so many teams playing good hockey, it should translate into some great ratings for the NHL over the next three months. The Western Conference doesn't have a team without a shot at making the post season and the East is nearly as tight, making it a great year for the fans of the game.
