The fourth annual Interstellar Rodeo in Edmonton took place July 24-26 at Hawrelak Park and presented a unique and eclectic musical line up.

Organized by Six Shooter Records, the three-day music festival has been compared to a smaller scale Folk Festival. With artists that included folk, roots, blues, alternative, and singer/songwriter, the ampitheatre at Hawrelak Park was almost sold out to capacity.
Things got started on Friday evening with local Edmonton band The Wet Secrets, presenting their alternative rock in marching band uniforms. Texas Americana singer/songwriter Shakey Graves was a crowd favourite, as was art rocker St. Vincent. Local singer/songwriter Joe Nolan played a tweener set between Graves and St. Vincent.

Saturday's line up included country-rock band NQ Arbuckle, the incredible vocalist and instrumentalist Rhiannon Giddens, who performed country classics, as well as Celtic, Americana, and bluegrass. Singer/songwriter Elle King is only in his 20s but has a voice that resonates with worldliness. Justin Townes Earle, son of the legendary Steve Earle, is stepping into his own as a singer/songwriter and performer. Tanya Tagaq mesmerized the audience with her merging of traditional Inuit throat-singing with modern electronica. Father John Misty was the final headliner, with his songs that ranged from smooth pop to straight-ahead folk, and a performance that saw him glide over the stage as though he was weightless.

Sunday got started off with Oh Susanna, who performed a few songs with fellow Edmonton musician Colleen Brown (who had her own tweener set on Saturday). Lee Harvey Osmond, (a psychedelic folk project of Tom Wilson from bands such as Junkhouse and Blackie and the Rodeo Kings) played early in the afternoon but could easily have been a headliner later in the day judging by the enthusiastic reaction of fans. Black Joe Lewis brought the blues and funk to the rodeo, and Lake Street Drive , a quartet from Brooklyn, brought together pop and jazz and soul. Buffy Sainte-Marie, whose career spans five decades, beginning with the 60s folk scene, brought her songwriting and activism to the stage to multiple generations of fans. The Interstellar All Stars brought together several well-known Canadian folk musicians to the stage, including Luke Doucet of Whitehorse, Joel Plaskett, and Kathleen Edwards. Finally, Charles Bradley ended the festival on notes of soul and funk reminiscent of James Brown.

Even the several hours of rain on Saturday afternoon did not deter the audience, which gathered closely under the covered area of the ampitheatre, and broke out umbrellas and ponchos (many of which were provided by free by the festival).
The festival also featured a variety of food trucks, artists selling their original work, and a "bar" with an extensive selection of wine. In fact, specific wines were paired to most of the artists by local wine writer Gurvinder Bhatia of Vinomania.
