The main event at UFC 188, which took place in Mexico City, Mexico, lasted three rounds, with Werdum retaining the title.
Werdum went into the fight as the underdog (4/1), but in the third round he managed to get a guillotine on Velasquez, who ended up submitting. In the first round Velasquez ended up getting cut on his left eye, and it appeared he was struggling to overcome it. In the second round Velasquez managed to land a few leg kicks early on, and the two continued to exchange strikes.
Last night was the first night in two years that Velasquez fought. He last fought in October 2013, but had to take a long time off due to injury. As of now, there has been no official announcement in regards who will end up fighting for the heavyweight title next.
Before the main event took place, Kelvin Gastelum ended up defeating Nate Marquardt via TKO in the second round. Tecia Torres also fought and won via decision over Angela Hill, which means Torres (6-0) is still undefeated. In the lightweight division, Gilbert Melendez ended up being defeated by Eddie Alvarez via split decision.
