Delta Airlines Flight 1156, coming from Portland, Oregon, and Southwest Airlines Flight 2492, from Milwaukee,, landed safely at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta on Saturday, according to airport spokesman Reese McCranie, as reported by Reuters.
A CBS affiliate WCGL in Atlanta confirmed the threats were made on Twitter, with the first threat going to Delta Airlines at noon EST. NORAD spokesman Preston Schlachter told CBS News that two North American Aerospace Defense Command fighter planes escorted the two airliners to the Atlanta airport as a precautionary measure. NORAD would give no more details.
According to what WCGL is saying, the unknown person claimed to have smuggled the bomb through a back entrance to the airport, with the help of an airport security guard. The threat message continued, "I have a bomb on one of your planes, but I forgot which one when I left the airport. Can you help me find it?"
FBI Special Agent Stephen Emmett in Atlanta confirmed that both flights were "safely on the ground," and were being searched. "Earlier, airline officials received a bomb threat and precautions were taken, to include the scrambling of military aircraft via NORAD, having deemed the threats as credible," Emmett told CBS News. "Explosives units at Atlanta are now on scene to sweep the aircraft."
On January 8, a similar incident occurred, forcing a small Delta Airlines plane heading to Atlanta to make an emergency landing in South Carolina, due to a similar threat. Delta Flight 5437 had 46 passengers and crew aboard. The plane landed safely, according to WCGL.
