York Regional Police in Toronto have arrested a 28-year-old man in connection with a series of assaults on women and their feet. The alleged assaults have all taken place in the past eight days.
The man turned himself into police yesterday after his image was broadcast on media. He's been charged with four counts of sexual assault, three counts of theft under $5,000, sexual interference with a person under the age of 16, and robbery.
"As a direct result of media coverage and tips from the public," the police wrote on their website, "The York Regional Police Special Victims Unit, Sexual Assault Section have arrested a suspect involved in multiple sexual assaults involving feet and thefts of footwear from York Region, Innisfil, Bradford and Barrie."

Police report that the first alleged assault occurred on November 19 in Richmond Hill when a man entered a tanning salon and asked a woman if he could look at her shoes, telling her he was shopping for shoes. She took a shoe off and handed it over to him and the man smelled that shoe in front of the woman, and then, police say, "fled with it."
The following day the behavior of the man became more disturbing. This time, in another tanning salon in Richmond Hill, a man matching the description of the man who smelled and stole the shoe the day previous grabbed a woman's leg and forcibly removed a boot and a sock from a foot, against her protestations. He also licked at least one foot before running out the door, this time with both a sock and boot in hand.
There were, police said, other similar instances at tanning salons in Aurora, Innisfil and in Bradford. Mattieu Petrin, 28, will appear in court in Newmarket today for a bail hearing.
