The songstress either wrote or co-wrote all 12 tracks on the album, which was released on Republic Records. It opens with the upbeat "Live It Up" and it is followed by the infectious, up-tempo tune "Blaze." "If You Love Me Let Me Go" is one of those beautiful sad songs on the album, that Caillat sings so well.
Her lead single, the bittersweet ballad "Try" is inspirational, and it showcases her vulnerability as an artist. It has become an anthem of female empowerment due to its optimistic lyrics. It is safe to say that Caillat's vulnerability is the listener's reward. "Take your make up off, Let your hair down, Take a breath, Look into the mirror, at yourself, Don't you like you, Cause I like you," Caillat sings.
Caillat's vocals on "Never Let You Down" are crystalline and uplifting. It has a catchy beat that makes the listener clap along.
"Land Called Far Away" is mellow, with a laid-back vibe to it, while "Nice Guys" is a radio-friendly pop tune that would fare well on the airwaves. Equally impressive is "Floodgates."
"Just Like That" is reminiscent of a quintessential Taylor Swift song, which should be taken as a compliment (since Swift consistently releases great music, similar to Caillat). "Break Free" is addicting, with a liberating message to it, and she displays a lot of range on the emotional ballad "Never Getting Over You."
Her album closes with on a fitting note with "Bigger Love," where the pop listener is left wanting to hear more from Caillat. She was the sole writer of the closing track.
The Verdict
Overall, Colbie Caillat delivers on her latest album Gypsy Heart. Her songwriting is warm and sincere, and her vocals are gentle and heartfelt. This CD garners 4.5 out of 5 stars.
