The award was presented during the 2014 GQ Men Of The Year Awards, which were being held at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden.
Jenna Coleman, who, as Capaldi's co-star in Doctor Who, plays the actor's TARDIS-travelling companion Clara Oswald in the hit BBC science-fiction drama series, presented the 57-year-old with the 2014 GQ TV Personality of the Year award at the event.
On receiving the award, Doctor Who News reports, Capaldi joked:
This is the first I've received for my personality, which I assume means they've never met me.
However, in more serious mode, reports GQ, Capaldi admitted:
The reason I've got this award is because I got the chance to play the roll of a lifetime ... twice. Malcolm Tucker in The Thick Of It. And I also got to play Doctor Who. The real people who know the personality of the year are my family — my mother and my sister and my wife — who have put up with my personality and endured it to the point that I can get this.
Capaldi's predecessor as the Doctor, Matt Smith, has twice received GQ awards — first for Best Actor in 2010; and then, in 2011, for Most Stylish Man.
As reported earlier by Digital Journal, this year's GQ Men of the Year Awards — now in their 17th year — have been widely criticised for giving the Philanthropist of the Year award to Tony Blair, the controversial former British prime minister.
