Pandurang Rao, Iyengar's secretary, said, "Guruji has been unwell and weak for the past 15 days. Before being shifted to a hospital for observation, he was being treated at home." After a series of tests, Iyengar has been diagnosed with heart-pumping failure. Iyengar had suffered two heart attacks in 1998 and 2000 respectively.
Iyengar is however fully conscious, and is conversing with those around him and eating normal food. Iyengar travelled to Delhi in May, and stayed for a month in the city of Bangalore. "The trips certainly put a strain on him. Ever since he returned to Pune, he said he could feel the exhaustion," Rao said.
"He had been having difficulty in breathing and had swelling in his feet for the last three weeks, but preferred to be treated at home. Yesterday, his condition worsened and he was brought here. Coupled with heart attacks, his age is probably the reason for his illness. He agreed to be hospitalised on Monday. His kidneys are not functioning properly and he was a little breathless on Monday, but is stable now. We will need more time to know how well he is responding to the treatment," said the managing director and chief consultant of the hospital where Iyengar is being treated.
As of now, only his children, a few students and relatives are allowed to visit him because the family does not want a crowd gathering at the hospital. The treatment center's name has therefore been withheld.
Bellur Krishnamachar Sundararaja Iyengar, popularly known as BKS Iyengar is the founder of Iyengar yoga, and is credited with popularizing Hatha Yoga around the world. His book, Light on Yoga looks at various aspects of the science of Hatha Yoga. He was awarded India's second-highest civilian honor, the Padma Vibhushan earlier in 2014.
