AMC's 'Hell On Wheels' rolls on into its fourth season

AMC’s "Hell On Wheels" is one of the channel’s longest running dramas. Based on historical fact, it tells the story of the transcontinental railroad through the eyes of the people who made it happen. What an ambitious piece of work it is.

Hell On Wheels takes place in the middle of the 19th century, when the construction of the first transcontinental railroad began. Cullen Bohannon (Anson Mount) is the main protagonist, a former Confederate soldier and tormented soul who heads west to find work and seek vengeance on the Union soldiers who murdered his wife and son. The story is immersing and the acting is impressive with award winning actors like Colm Meany also on board.
The series is an ambitious outing as most historical dramas are. But the challenge of filming a story that takes place on the rugged landscape of the old west must have been particularly daunting. The majority of the exteriors were filmed in Calgary, Canada, as well as the T’suu T’ina Native Indian reservation in Alberta. During the third season, filming had to be suspended when flooding in southern Alberta caused a mandatory evacuation of the area. Authenticity has its price.
For those who follow the show (spoiler alert for those who have yet to see the season opener), here is the lowdown for the fourth season opener. It begins in 1868 as the railroad is at a standstill. Thomas Durant is broke. Elam Ferguson is presumed dead. Cullen Bohannon trapped is in a Mormon fort with a pregnant wife and the Swede. The task of uniting America by rail remains undone. Civilization encroaches West, bringing with it a battle between big government and big business for control of the nation’s most important rail hub, Cheyenne, Wyoming, the “Magic City of the Plains.”
If Hell On Wheels sounds interesting (it is), and you would like to start the journey at the beginning, DVD sets are available as well as full seasons to stream on Amazon, Netflix, and iTunes.
