New information from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control about youth smoking has come out in a report from CBC news. Evidence shows that Canadian teens prefer "flavoured" tobacco such as fruit, mint, chocolate and menthol.
Journalists there also say tobacco companies market to children with cigars and cigarillos (basically smaller, flavored cigars) which are not covered under cigarette laws in Canada. The situation is not better in the United States.
A previous study by the CDC in 2013 also took note of the trend. It has become a hot topic for many families both in Canada and in the United States. In fact the 2013 findings virtually mirror these recent ones.
A report on Boston.com notes that local teens like the smaller flavored cigars as well. They are smoking them in spite of, or perhaps because of, the ban on them.
The forbidden aspect and taste are two things that teens in a rebellious phase are drawn to. New laws will not cut down on the psychological appeal of smoking. They can only increase it.
