World Cup 2014: How far will the Italian team spirit take them?

England lost to Italy in Brazil's Amazon on Saturday after the Azzurri team won 2-1 in their first Group D match of the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Just how far will the Italian team spirit take Italy in this year's World Cup matches?

The game against England showed why they can go far at this World Cup and there is a togetherness there that has not always been the norm in Italian teams. In a Guardian Op-ed piece Marcus Christenson of The Guardian wrote that Mario Balotelli, on the morning of the game, tweeted to an expectant Italy: “Whatever team you support, today only the blue Azzurri team matters. Leave hate, jealousy and contempt to one side and we will stay united ALL of us.”
The teammates were certainly united and you could see at the final whistle what it meant to the players. There was hugging, shouting, high-fives, and a big embrace between Georgio Chiellini and Mario Balotelli. One is a Juventus player and the other a Milan player. Yet they played in harmony and celebrated in harmony. If the team stays united like this, who knows what can happen at this year's World Cup.
