World Naked Bike Ride: Nude bike riders protest on city streets

Posted Jun 14, 2014 by Marcus Hondro
Yes once again the World Naked Bike Ride is hitting the streets of our planet. The WNBR is a political event about the dangers of vehicle emissions and it seeks to raise awareness of sustainable energy issues; it's also a quest for positive body image.

The WNBR pitches itself as the largest naked bike riding event in the history and they are not likely to get any quarrel on that point. It is a 'Bare As You Dare' event that has taken place in over 20 counties and 70 cities around the world, though there is no one particular date that it happens on.
Today, June 14, there are naked bike rides in Toronto, Vancouver, Chicago, Montpelier in Vermont, Houston, New Orleans, Eugene, San Francisco, London, Cardiff, Berlin, Munich, Dresden, Mexico City and Valladolid in Spain. There are a host of cities also hosting a naked bike ride later this month or in July.
Naturally organizers tend to schedule a World Naked Bike Ride in their city during warmer weather months, hence Sydney, Australia, Johannesburg and Cape Town in South Africa host naked rides in March. The 2014 World Cup host Brazil also has March naked bike rides in Rio, Sao Paulo and other cities.
This is what is done at naked bike rides: people get on bikes naked or as close to naked as they dare. Many indulge in body-paint, often covering up selected parts. They ride over a predetermined course, with placards supporting clean-air and other causes held up by riders, and those watching. There's often a speech given on what it's all about.
One of the more successful Naked Bike Rides is in Portland, this one is under the cloak of darkness, starting at 10 at night. In 2011, 8,000 naked riders streaked through Portland's city streets and this year organizers say the numbers have grown since. Portland was among the first cities to institute a World Naked Bike Ride when it all began in 2004.
Some countries that have one or more cities that host a Naked Bike Ride include Belgium, Chile, Denmark, France, Finland, Israel, Japan, Latvia, New Zealand, Paraguay, Poland, Sweden and Taiwan.
