Posted Jun 8, 2014 by Anne Sewell
A Spanish star will shine at the UNIX Gallery in NYC from June 12 to July 12, as the work of artist Eugenio Merino goes on show in his “Always Shameless” exhibition. This despite legal battles by the artist to defend his freedom of speech in Spain.

Back in 2011, the artist started work on “Always Shameless,” which is a play on the 1993 Coca Cola slogan “Always”.

As his first piece, Merino created a life-sized sculpture of the former Spanish dictator, Francisco Franco, preserved in a Coca Cola refrigerator, which was dubbed “Always Franco.”
Despite the fact that Franco has been out of the picture, so to speak, since 1975, it seems he still has supporters, and the Fundación Nacional Francisco Franco, an organization dedicated to preserving the legacy of the dictator, was quick to sue Merino. Merino won. This inspired Merino to create a second sculpture of Franco, this time depicting the dictator as a punching ball wearing broken sunglasses. He got sued for that one too. In both cases, Merino had to go to court to defend his freedom of speech, and in each case the victory was his.

A blend of the “Always” Coca Cola slogan with the artist’s unique brand of political art has resulted in several dark and poignant works, reflecting his struggle as a politically active and controversial artist.
Continuing the “Always Shameless” cause, Merino has created a series of sculptures of political figures which will be on display for all to see in the UNIX gallery this month.
Franco is not the only oppressive leader to feature in the show. Various dictators are to be found, either displayed in a Coca Cola fridge or mounted as a handy "Punch a Politician" punching ball. Each sculpture is fashioned in silicone with great, recognizable detail.
Mao Zedong, Fidel Castro and Kim Jong-un are just some of the characters featured in the "Always Motherfuckers" collection.

His work gives a different and darkly humorous look at how we keep the legacies of each of these tyrants alive. By his art, Merino chooses to put them in cold storage, which sometimes, as in the case of Franco, upsets their supporters.
