400 men walk in heels to raise women's rights awareness

There's an old adage that to know someone, you must first walk a mile in her shoes. Thursday night, nearly 400 St. Louis men did exactly that, donning high heel pumps and marching in protest of sexual assault and violence against women.

The march, appropriately titled Walk a Mile in Her Shoes, was conceived last year by members of the YWCA Metro St. Louis Women's Resource Center, and has since become an annual event.
The philosophy behind the march is that men are often the root cause of violent acts against women including rape and assault. Thus engaging men in constructive dialogue is the logical first step toward prevention. The men who participate in the event symbolically represent the notion all men should put themselves in women's shoes.
The march kicked off at MAC in downtown St. Louis Thursday evening. High heels were handed out to participants upon registration an hour before the event.
After the march, the festivities continued with live music at the Missouri Athletic Club.
The YWCA, not to be confused with the YMCA, provides shelter and support to women who are the victims of sexual assault or domestic violence. They have branches all throughout the world, and their center in St. Louis serves more than 1,000 women annually, according to their website.
It is estimated that as many as one in three women will experience some form of sexual assault in their lifetime.
