This smartphone will be launched in Russia and India. In places like these, the features of the smartphone aren't as important as the price and so Samsung hopes this will give their Tizen a competitive edge.
Unlike the major operating systems Android and iOS on the market today, Tizen is a much smaller start-up only recently opened up their software development kit (SDK) to developers for third party applications. The number of apps Tizen offers simply cannot compete...yet!
A Samsung 'Unpacked' event is scheduled in Russia where the upcoming smartphone will be announced in the upcoming weeks. The smartphone is expected to shortly go on sale there and then make its way to other developing countries including Brazil and India although WSJ suggests it will be India.
Samsung and Intel have been working on the mobile operating system along with the hardware support for over a year now. Japan's NTT Docomo has already agreed to carry the smartphones once ready.
While Samsung is the number 1 smartphone seller and Android partner, it relies heavily on Google for software updates. It appears Samsung is attempting to break away from Google and work towards its own path for greater control of the software.
