It is the sophomore single from his album The Outsiders. "Give Me Back My Hometown" commences in an acoustic fashion, backed with banjo accompaniment and he showcases his rich, baritone vocals, while staying true to the neo-traditional country genre. While this tune can mean so many things to different people, it really is about the male narrator missing his girl that is gone, and simultaneously being haunted by memories of her as he returns to his hometown. The hand claps midway through the chorus are an added treat.
Church co-penned the song with fellow country songwriter Luke Laird.
I applaud Eric Church for his brevity on this song and his music video, and displaying his vulnerability and range as a recording country artist. This new tune is a breath of fresh air and rightfully deserved to reach the top of the charts. It is a joy each time I hear it played on New York's country radio station, Nash FM 94.7.
Jay Joyce has done an impressive job on the song's production and Church's vocals are raw and crisp.
The Verdict
Overall, this new single is perhaps by favorite Eric Church song to date (along with "Homeboy") and its music video is another remarkable effort. While a few songs of his in the past were mediocre at best (such as his previous single "The Outsiders"), "Give Me Back My Hometown" is bold and it garners an A rating. Congrats to Eric Church for this major milestone. I would not be surprised if it will be nominated for "Song of the Year," "Video of the Year" and "Single of the Year" at a future country music award ceremony, and Church himself in the "Male Artist" category.
