New York City joins others with own Internet web address: .nyc

Forget .com or .net or any of the generic web addresses, they're now passe for businesses and other organizations in New York City. As of today New Yorkers can apply to have an '.nyc' web address.

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio made the announcement that applications are being taken now for the .nyc web address, but it's been in the works since July, when the city got approval from the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).
Fees for registering a business or organization are to be set by the individual register applied to, but AP reports that a portion of those fees goes to the city itself.
Registered trademark holders who have a New York City address will be the first applicants to be processed. It's believed that companies who apply for and receive an .nyc web address will be able to distinguish themselves from competitors not in New York.
Other cities either now with their own web address or who have one coming include London (.london), Berlin (.berlin), Istanbul (.istanbul). Las Vegas (.vegas) and Miami (.miami).
