Kanarikov was pronounced dead at the scene, and his son Kirill was pronounced dead at St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital some time after the fall. He was carried to the neighboring hospital during cardiac arrest as doctors tried desperately and in vain to save him.
“They were pumping his chest and working on him, and nothing” said Luis Ortiz, a hospital witness. “It was just heartbreaking. ...They tried to do the best they could.”
According to sources, Kanarikov was supposed to be meeting his estranged wife Svetlana Bukharina at the 17th Precinct station house to drop off his son after a three-hour visit at the time of the tragic murder-suicide.
Video surveillance shows Kanarikov leading his unsuspecting young boy by the hand up the stairs of the Manhattan apartment building minutes before the horrendous catastrophe took place.
Bukharina and Kanarikov were married for four years before separating in August. According to Bukharina, he was abusive to the point that she placed a restraining order on him that was later lifted in September. She claims he had also previously threatened to kill himself and his son.
Sunday was the first day that Kanarikov had been granted unsupervised visitation of his son since the restraining order was filed in August, according to Police Commisioner Raymond Kelly. The child was handed off to him at 10 a.m. at the police station and was expected to be returned to the same location at 1 p.m. as part of the visitation arrangement.
It still remains unknown why Kanarikov chose to murder his son and end his life in the way that he did.
Ironically, Kanarikov submitted a post on his Facebook profile page back in September professing his love and commitment to his family which read ”I want to be the best dad and husband — nothing is more important to me right now.”
