Roberto Luongo blanks Oilers, now one shutout behind Patrick Roy

Posted Dec 14, 2013 by Marcus Hondro
Roberto Luongo skated a step closer to the great Patrick Roy Friday night by blanking the Edmonton Oilers 4-0. The 19-save whitewashing of the hapless Oilers gives Bobby Lou 65 shutouts in his career, one behind Roy's 66.

Roy sits in 14th place all-time on the NHL's shutout list, just one behind Roy Worters, who played in the 1920s and 30s with the Pittsburgh Pirates (defunct), the Montreal Canadiens and the New York Americans (defunct).
Luongo would have caught Roy on this night if it were not for allowing a goal with just 7.1 seconds left last Sunday night in a 3-1 win over the team Roy now coaches, the Colorado Avalanche. After that game, Roy jokingly told reporters that while Luongo would catch him in shutouts he wouldn't catch him in wins (Roy has 551 career wins, Luongo 363).
Sometime next season or the one following Luongo will move into a tie for 10th place on the all-time shutout list with Tony Esposito and Ed Belfour, who each retired with 76 shutouts. To overtake Jacques Plante (82 shutouts) and get into the top 5 the Vancouver Canucks goalie needs another 17 shutouts.
Roy had 29 shutouts with the Canadiens and 37 with the Avalanche. Luongo has 1 shutout with the New York Islanders, 26 with the Florida Panthers and 38 with the Canucks.
The all-time shutout leader is Martin Brodeur who has amassed 124 shutouts, all with the New Jersey Devils; Brodeur's latest coming on Saturday night, Dec. 14.
