New York's attorney general has asked a state judge to unseal documents about the 1971 Attica State Prison riot and takeover, the deadliest inmate rebellion that the United States has ever witnessed.

Attorney General Eric Schneiderman says that it is time to bring transparency to what he referred to as one of the state government's darkest chapters. A total of 11 staff and 32 inmates died in the maximum-security prison and all but four were shot by authorities.
Schneiderman wants the court in Wyoming County to open the hundreds of detailed pages about the five days in September 1971 when inmates took control of the rural western New York prison until state troopers and guards stormed the facility.
The documents that Schneiderman wants unsealed are part of a 1975 report by a special commission that examined New York's efforts to investigate both the riot and its aftermath.
