Nintendo announced this morning that it is officially ending production of Wii console. This particular gaming system was the first of its kind and allowed the Japanese company to get back into the console gaming wars.

While its fight was usually a losing one compared to Sony and Microsoft, the console's motion capture tech changed the gaming world for the better. While the Wii U is the next generation console that Nintendo would like people to focus on, its predecessor is still the best selling gaming console in the company's history. Only the DS and the Game Boy saw better sales figures.
Despite the brisk sales numbers, Nintendo put a simple message on its website, saying "manufacturing has ended."
The success of the Wii and (so far) failure of Nintendo's next generation console is an interesting tale. The first console saw massive sales fairly quickly. It actually took much longer for the Xbox 360 to hit similar sales numbers. In contrast, the company had a year head start on next generation consoles like the Xbox One or the Playstation 4 and has struggled mightily.
It appears that Nintendo is going to focus more of its attention on its newest console in hopes of reviving interest.
