The Kenyan president today confirmed the Westgate Mall attack had resulted in the deaths of 61 civilians and six soldiers. Five of the attackers were shot dead by Kenyan troops and a further 11 are in custody.
Reports by Kenya's foreign minister that a British woman was among the Somali militants that attacked the shopping mall have been denied by Al-Shabab, the group responsible for the attack. In a Twitter posting the group said: "We have an adequate number of young men who are fully committed and we do not employ our sisters in such military operations."
In an interview with AlJazeera newspaper yesterday a spokesman for Al-Shabab defended the group's decision to attack Westgate Mall, stating: "The place we attacked is Westgate shopping mall. It is a place where tourists from across the world come to shop, where diplomats gather. It is a place where Kenya's decision-makers go to relax and enjoy themselves. Westgate is a place where there are Jewish and American shops. So we have to attack them.
"On civilian deaths, Kenya should first be asked why they bombed innocent Somali civilians in refugee camps, why they bombed innocent people in Gedo and Jubba regions. They should be asked that first before us."
