SF Giants apologize after fan hurls banana at Orioles' Adam Jones

The San Francisco Giants baseball team has apologized following a Saturday incident in which an apparently racist spectator allegedly threw a banana at Baltimore Orioles outfielder Adam Jones during a game between the teams at AT&T Park.
The Baltimore Sun reports Jones, the three-time Major League All-Star center fielder, Tweeted about the alleged incident following the Orioles' 10-2 win over the struggling Giants.
"I want to thank whatever slapdick threw that banana towards my direction in CF in the last inning," a clearly incensed Jones tweeted. "Way to show ur class u jackass."
The alleged incident occurred shortly after Jones, who is black, hit a three-run home run off Giants reliever Barry Zito in the top of the ninth inning. Many Giants fans are frustrated that their team, the defending World Series champions, has been steadily slipping from contention in the National League West. The Giants are currently in last place, 13 games under .500 and 13 games behind the division-leading, red-hot rival Los Angeles Dodgers.
But the throwing of a banana at a black player would seem to signify more than an expression of fan frustration. The practice is not unheard of among racist football fans in Europe, where players of African origin are often the targets of vicious bigotry.
Such racist outbursts are rare in US sporting venues. So far, no video evidence of the alleged banana-throwing incident at AT&T Park has emerged, and neither team's broadcasters mentioned it during Saturday's game. The Giants say they are investigating the matter and have apologized to Jones.
"We would like to extend our sincerest apologies to Adam and the entire Orioles organization for this unfortunate incident," the team's statement read in part. "The inappropriate actions of this individual in no way reflect the values of our organization and our fans."
