Detroit Tigers shortstop Jhonny Peralta (centre) celebrates his three-run home run with his teammates Brennan Boesch, Ryan Raburn and Delmon Young in the second inning. Three homers on the afternoon by Miguel Cabrera, Austin Jackson, and Torii Hunter proved the difference in the ball game. Hunter had three of the Tigers 17 hits on the day and drove in four runs to lead the charge.
Anibal Sanchez notched his tenth win on the year, pitching seven strong innings, allowing just two runs and striking out eight batters. Detroit improved to 69-46 on the year and making a strong statement about who is the best team in the American League.
For the NY Yankees, this season just keeps bring bad news. New York dropped to 58-57 on the year and 10.5 games behind Boston in the AL East race. Lyle Overbay was the lone bright spot on the day for the Bronx Bombers as he went 2-3 with a homer and drove in all three runs for the Yankees.
The Tigers will look to take the series on Sunday when they send Justin Verlander to the mound against Andy Petite. Verlander is just 5-5 in his career against New York, but the Tigers are playing great baseball and that will make it difficult for the Yankees.
