As is her style, DeGeneres injected a little humor into the announcement. "I am so excited to be hosting the Oscars for the second time. You know what they say — the third time's the charm," said DeGeneres in a release.
Producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron will return as producers. They said, "We are thrilled to have Ellen DeGeneres host the Oscars. As a longtime friend, we had always hoped to find a project for us to do together and nothing could be more exciting than teaming up to do the Oscars."
As for the why, it seems to center on her comic charm and, no doubt that she is well-respected in her field. Not to mention she has a very popular TV talk show.
"There are few stars today who have Ellen's gift for comedy, with her great warmth and humanity. She is beloved everywhere and we expect that the audience at the Dolby Theatre, and in homes around the globe, will be as excited by this news as we are," concluded Zadan and Meron.
Like Seth MacFarlane last year, the producers tap a TV star. If she can bring in her fans, many of which are the same demographics as Oscar, it will be a hit. MacFarlane was able to push viewership back to the 40 million range. DeGeneres last hosted in 2007. For that gig, she was nominated for an Emmy Award.
The Academy has been busy of late. They just elected a new president. Here is what she said. "I agreed with Craig and Neil immediately that Ellen is the ideal host for this year's show," said Cheryl Boone Isaacs, Academy President. "We're looking forward to an entertaining, engaging and fun show." Boone Isaacs and the new board added a casting branch as well recently.
The decision is sitting well among current Academy board members, too. "Ellen is talented, wonderfully spontaneous, and knows how to entertain a worldwide audience," said Dawn Hudson, Academy CEO.
Bringing in that audience always rives this announcement. No to mention, actually being a fan of the show. "She's a big fan of the Oscars; we're huge fans of hers. It's a perfect match," added Hudson.
Even the network likes it. "It is an honor to welcome back Ellen DeGeneres as the host of the biggest entertainment celebration of the year," said Paul Lee, president, ABC Entertainment Group. "She is the consummate entertainer, equally beloved by her peers in the industry, movie fans and television viewers. We very much look forward to having her back on ABC for Oscar Sunday."
The Academy Awards® will be broadcast live on Oscar Sunday, March 2, 2014, on ABC. They are in March in order to not compete the the upcoming Olympics.
