On July 3, veteran comedienne and actress Margaret Cho chatted via telephone with Digital Journal about the fifth season of her Lifetime comedic drama series “Drop Dead Diva,” which premiered on June 23, to rave reviews.
The show was produced by Sony Pictures Television and it stars Brooke Elliott in the leading role of attorney Jane Bingum, Margaret Cho (who plays Jane’s paralegal assistant), as well as Jackson Hurst, Kate Levering, April Bowlby and Lex Medlin. “This season is going really well. We are still shooting but we have a lot of great surprises for fans. There will be a lot of romance and lot of drama,” she shared.
This season of “Drop Dead Diva” will feature cameos from Emmy-nominated actor John Ratzenberger and actress Jamie Ray Newman.
Margaret has a “Monsters of Talk” podcast with comedian Jim Short. “This is really fun and something that I do every Monday at 9 a.m. and we have a lot of episodes from all over the world. We also get to hang out with our friends and there is a wonderful animation element to it that we have which is really fun,” she stated.
She is also resuming her stand-up comedy tour “Mother” with all brand new material. “I will be out on the road soon and I will be touring all over the world from the United States to Norway, Munich, Sweden and Germany, so that is exciting too,” the comedienne said.
Margaret revealed that her forthcoming “Mother” tour will consist of such issues as “gay marriage,” as well as “queer politics and other different topics.” “I cannot wait to get out there and perform this show. I change the show everywhere that I go so it is always specific to the place that I am in and that is really exciting,” she said.
On July 13, Margaret will be performing at Fire Island’s Ice Palace and Grove Hotel in New York. “That’ll be great and I love Fire Island. It’s such an honor to play at that amazing venue. I am thrilled to be returning there again. It is a lot of fun to work there and have a little bit of a vacation,” she said.
She noted that she would love to work with Fiona Apple and Kathy Griffin again. “I worked with Kathy on many different projects and I would love to be a new host on ‘The View.’ That’s my obsession. I would love to do that since I like those ladies and I would love to go back,” Margaret remarked.
Her comedic album, “Cho Dependent (Live in Concert)” garnered a Grammy nomination this past year for “Best Comedy Album,” where she joined the company of Kathy Griffin and Jimmy Fallon. “I hope to win someday,” she said with a laugh. “Kathy and I are very good friends and she is the best.”
In addition to her acting and comedy, she is working on her upcoming studio album. “I just completed recording and now we are mixing and mastering the CD. I think it’s going to be out in the fall. It spans all genres and it involves comedy music but it is very beautiful. We recorded it in Austin and in El Paso, so it’s a very ‘Texas’ album,” she said.
