Maple Leafs-Canadiens series on hold, awaits Bruins game Sunday

Fans in Montreal and Toronto, and in Canada, waiting for a first-round NHL playoff match-up between the Canadiens and Maple Leafs will have to wait a little longer. With Montreal's win over Toronto Saturday things are on hold.

Had Montreal lost in the final regular season game for the club they would have been stuck in fourth place and with the Maple Leafs stuck in fifth fans would have had that all-Canadian match-up. But Montreal's 4-1 win, coupled with Boston's 3-2 OT loss to Washington, has the Canadiens a point up on the Bruins in the Northeast division of the eastern conference.

That leaves Montreal in second overall in the conference and Boston in fourth (despite having fewer points, Washington gets third by being the leader of one of the three conference divisions). Though the regular NHL season was intended to be over for all 30 teams Saturday night, due to the Boston marathon bombing a game between the Bruins and the Ottawa Senators was cancelled and will be made up Sunday at 7p.m. ET.
If Boston loses then it's the Bruins and the Leafs and Montreal will get the Ottawa Senators, who would vault over the New York Islanders with the two points. If the Bruins win they get the Islanders and fans in Canada will have their Montreal-Toronto first-round match-up. One point leaves the Bruins still behind Montreal and it'll be Boston-Toronto.
The Canadiens and Maple Leafs have had many historic playoff meetings over the first 50 plus years of the NHL, In the 15 series between the clubs in the postseason, Montreal leads 8-7 and three of the last four times they've met the Canadiens have won the series, 4-0.
They have not met since the quarterfinals of the 1978-79 season.
