On Friday evening a gang of three foreign thugs, whom police speculate may be some of the Albanians who escaped from Trikala prison last weekend, committed an armed robbery at a taverna in the Peloponnese village of Palaiokoundoura. The criminals fled the taverna in a stolen car and were soon pursued by police.
The 25-year-old woman, identified as Katerina Zogali, was returning by car to her home in Corinth when she became caught in the cross fire as the criminals, armed with Kalashnikovs, fired at police. Newsit reported a bullet from a Kalashnikov ricocheted through the driver's seat, puncturing Katerina's back. Tragically she died in hospital from the injury. Katerina had survived a personal battle with leukemia.
The armed criminals are still at large and police warn they are very dangerous. During the prison escape last weekend two prison guards were seriously injured as accomplices who facilitated the escape used grenades and Kalashnikovs. Ekathimerini reported Golden Dawn have called for police to be armed with heavier weapons and for violent migrants to be subjected to the death penalty.
