The second story was given considerable time - nearly nine minutes - on the Newsnight programme Tuesday night, and the often pugnacious Jeremy Paxman was asking thoughtful questions about it rather than bullish ones. If you are no au fait with Bitcoin or other virtual currencies, you will find some background information here.
The studio critic was rather skeptical about Bitcoin if not of virtual currencies in general, but Paxman also spoke to American financial blogger Trace Mayer, who currently has a half hour interview about Bitcoin on his website.

When big companies like Amazon and Microsoft join that list, you'll know it has really arrived. In the meantime, perhaps this is a way out for the people of Cyprus?
