Ever since Japanese anime has been come into the mainstream, it has become a major international commodity. With anime and anything related to this medium being a major commodity of Japan, it's bound to be a popular imported commodity in North America. Things happen when anime and mainstream Hollywood collide with each other. Recently, you have various anime and manga titles getting live-action adaptations. One example is the Tom Cruise movie called “All You Need Is Kill” which is due for a 2014 release.
The anime movie called “Kite” is one of those titles that is getting a live-action adaptation. Recently, it has been reported that veteran Hollywood actor Samuel L. Jackson is confirmed to be part of the cast of this live action remake. Recently, he just got done working on the American remake of the Korean film called “Oldboy.” At the moment, he's about to shoot his parts for the remake and reboot of the popular science-fiction cop movie called “Robocop.” Then, he plans to do his scenes as Nick Fury for “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” which is the sequel to “Captain America: The First Avenger.”
Jackson said that in between Robocop and Captain America: The Winter Soldier, he will be filming in Johannesburg, South Africa for Kite. However, no further details have been given out for the remake of Kite.
In the live-action remake of Kite, the story focuses on a young woman who is going through a financial struggle. She teams up with her dead father's partner to find out the mystery of her father's death. Thus, she comes face-to-face with a corrupt security force that makes a profit of selling young women.
In the original anime, which came out in 1998, it focuses on an orphaned school girl named Sawa who is an assassin. She's on the payroll of a corrupt cop who gives her the targets to kill. It was followed by a short sequel film in 2008 called “Kite Liberator.” Also, the movies were connected to the same story universe as the anime movie “Mezzo Forte” and the following series called “Mezzo DSA.”
Due to the violent content of Kite, it is unknown if the live-action remake will be just as violent or less violent.
Jackson is no stranger to anime as he voiced Afro Samurai and Ninja Ninja in both "Afro Samurai" and "Afro Samurai: Resurrection."
