Charles Dickens novel "Great Expectations" has been adapted to the screen more than once. Each version has its own style and approach in telling the complex story with its cast of characters that Dickens wrote when he was 48 years old.
British actors Jeremy and Toby Irvine (who are also brothers in real life) teamed up to play the leading roles of young and grown up Pip, the main character in Dickens' classic novel.
Audiences may also remember Jeremy Irvine from his leading role in 'War Horse.' In 'Great Expectations,' however, the story's main plot follows the orphan Pip, who is rescued (in a sense) by a wealthy London benefactor who then raises the young man as a gentleman. Or so, that is the expectation.

Although there have been many remakes of 'Great Expectations' , what perhaps makes this adaptation more special is how the timing lines up with the bicentenary of Dickens' birth. The novel is notably one of the author's most famous works.
Additional cast members in this year's film version include Ralph Fiennes, who plays Magwitch, the criminal who forever impacts young Pip's life during a chance encounter, and Holliday Grainger, starring as Estella, another central character in the novel who becomes Pip's love interest.

The film was directed by Mike Newell, who is also famously known for directing ' Four Weddings and a Funeral,' as well as 'Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire,' to name but a few.
