Leisurely Labor Day weekend on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina Special
This three-day weekend is a time for honoring workers and is often celebrated by doing anything but work. Americans often go shopping, go to the beach, and have meals together, and such was the case on the Carolina coast.
Labor Day is a federal holiday in the United States and one in which "we honor the workers who built the world's strongest economy," according
to Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis.
Rooted in America's labor movement, and originating on September 5, 1882, Labor Day is observed annually on the first Monday of September. The three-day weekend is commonly a time for many in the U.S. to relax and go to football games, take trips, go shopping, attend community events, and simply enjoy time with family and friends.
For this American, Saturday was a time to take a short road trip to Hilton Head Island, S.C. My specific destinations were the Tanger Outlet Centers
on Hilton Head and a public beach, called Alder Lane Beach, on Hilton Head Island.
I stopped at the lovely Tanger 1 Outlet and, along with hundreds of others, enjoyed browsing in a number of the brand-name shops including J. Crew, Polo Ralph Lauren, DKNY, Michael Kors, and Hugo Boss. There were, of course, many serious shoppers there who were carrying numerous bags filled with name-brand items.
Time was quickly passing, though, and the Atlantic ocean beckoned, so I skipped going to Tanger 2 Outlet and headed straight for the beach. It quickly became clear that I was certainly not the only one who decided that Hilton Head Island was the place to spend Labor Day weekend. A quick look at license plates, and a few conversations, let me know that folks were from New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Washington, D.C., Georgia, Maryland, and many other states. Visitors and locals alike were spending their Labor Day weekend enjoying the warm, soothing waves of the Atlantic ocean, riding bicycles, taking walks along the beach, playing with their dogs, reading books, and many other non-work related activities.
As the sun began to set on Hilton Head Island, many at the beach started to pack-up and go back home or to their hotels.
Many others, like myself, found that they were famished and decided it was time to go directly to a restaurant. Not having been to Hilton Head Island before, and because I was so hungry, I stopped at the first restaurant I saw: Bomboras Grille and Chill Bar
. The outdoor patio was crowded with hungry patrons.
While it was noted on the menu
that the restaurant, opened just last year, had already received an award for the BBQ Pulled Pork Sliders, I went with an appetizer of black-eyed pea hummus and had Pan Roasted Blue Mussels (with Andouille Sausage, Fresh Crushed Tomatoes, Deglazed w/ White Wine & Served w/ Crostinis) for dinner. I was not disappointed.
For many Americans, Labor Day weekend is filled with leisurely activities and work is the last thing on their minds. Others, however, will be working on Labor Day, especially those who work in the service sector (hotels, restaurants, retail establishments, etc.). And for others, like myself, it's an opportunity to combine with work pleasure. Hilton Head Island provided a beautiful place to do both on this Labor Day weekend.
