Since Toronto Mayor Rob Ford skipped the city's Gay Pride celebration this year, a growing number of gays and lesbians plan to show up at his community backyard barbecue next weekend.

Xtra, a Toronto LGBT newspaper, says Leigh Williams got the idea when she heard that the mayor had issued an open invitation to his annual party. She started a Facebook invitation asking others to join her with their rainbow flags, and is using the hashtag #FORDPRIDE on Twitter. Williams says, “Based on the comments I am getting from people, everyone is genuinely excited and interested in this.”
The Mayor hosts the event in his mother's backyard in Etobicoke, and Ford says they can pack in up to 5,000 people for the September 7th event. He's promising hot dogs, hamburgers, beer, pop, pony rides for the kids and an evening fireworks display.
Williams invitation reads, "Since Robby was too busy to come to any Pride events this year we are going to bring the Pride Parade to his backyard. Bring your Pride in whatever form you like and let's show Rob what our community is all about! Above all, let's keep this peaceful, fun, and political."
More than 5000 invitations have gone out and hundreds have already replied that they plan to attend.
For the past two years Ford has skipped out on the annual Pride parade that draws an estimated crowd of one-million people, saying he was too busy. And Xtra reports that Ford didn't attend any Pride week events either during the 10-day festival.
Williams says while this is not a protest, she hopes to ask him a question about his no-show at Pride events, “Ford portrays himself as a man of the people, and we are all included in that.”
