In a press conference, Lehigh University Police Chief Ed Shupp stated that dispatch received a 911 call saying a male was found unresponsive in a dorm. Upon arrival around 7:20 this morning, police found Garrett Reid deceased in one of the Lehigh University dorm rooms. Garrett was assisting Eagles strength and conditioning coaches at training camp, which is being held at Lehigh. The report goes on to say that attempts were made to revive Garrett, but were unsuccessful. Police determined there was no “suspicious activity” involved, and they are working in conjunction with the Northampton County Coroners office to determine the cause of death.
In 2007, Garrett was arrested after being involved in a car accident. The accident seriously injured a woman, and Garrett admitted that he had used heroin prior to the accident. Heroin, testosterone, amphetamines and anti-depressants were found in his car after the accident. Coach Andy Reid took a month leave of absence after the accident to be with Garrett and the rest of the family and helped Garrett enter a rehab center.
Condolences began pouring in from around the NFL not long after the news of Garrett’s death was announced. Former Eagles running back Brian Westbook tweeted “So very sad to hear the news about Garrett Reid!! Bless the Reid family and friends!!? So sorry for your lost!?
"My condolences go out to Coach Reid and his family," Eagles starting quarterback Michael Vick tweeted.
At the start of his press conference, Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett said “Before we get started, we want to express our sincere condolences to Andy Reid and his wife, Tammy, and their whole family and the Philadelphia Eagle organization for the loss of his son, Garrett”.
Services for Garrett will be held on Tuesday, August 7, 2012 at 10:00 am.
