Salafist murderer Mohammed Merah, 23, was shot dead on March 22 after a dramatic 32-hour siege ended when police stormed his apartment. He had shot dead three Jewish children, a rabbi and three French soldiers, and filmed himself carrying out the attacks. Now his father is suing French police for the alleged "murder" of his son.
Algerian Mohamed Benalel Merah has filed a lawsuit against RAID, the special operations tactical unit of the French National Police. Isabelle Coutant-Peyre, a member of Merah's French legal team, said “This is a suit against unnamed persons for murder with aggravating circumstances concerning those who gave the orders at the top of the police" JTA reported. She cited the "aggravating circumstances as "300 to 400 heavily armed people and a guy shut up all alone in his apartment."
According to the Jerusalem Post Merah's Algerian lawyer, Zahia Mokhtari, said "there is evidence Merah was 'liquidated' by the police and not just killed in an exchange of fire."
The BBC reports that Merah's claims that his son was deliberately killed instead of captured have provoked outrage in France. Former French foreign minister Alain Juppe said "If I were the father of such a monster, I would shut my mouth in shame."
