Greek politicians condemn Golden Dawn live TV attack
Greek politicians of all parties have strongly condemned the attack on live television by far-right Golden Dawn MP on two female politicians. The government said the "attack is an attack against every democratic citizen."
The television attack has provoked outrage in Greece, with calls for anti-fascist demonstrations to be held across Greece on Friday. The rise of far-right extremism is disturbing politicians of all political persuasions who spoke out against it.
The Times of Malta
reported Government spokesman Dimitris Tsiodras said: "The government condemns in the most categorical way the attack by Golden Dawn spokesman Ilias Kasidiaris against Liana Kanelli and Rena Dourou. This attack is an attack against every democratic citizen."
reported the Coalition of the Extreme Left, SYRIZA, said the attack exposed “the real face of Chrysi Avgi as a criminal organization.” Antonis Samaras, leader of New Democracy, appealed for Golden Dawn to be isolated, whilst PASOK leader Evangelos Venizelos slammed the attack as "unacceptable."
Nikolaos Michaloliakos, leader of Golden Dawn, claims that the attack was blown out of all proportion, saying Kasidiaris was attacked first as papers were thrown at him and he was called a "fascist."
