5.8-magnitude earthquake hits off coast of Japan

A magnitude 5.8 earthquake is reported by the USGS as having struck off the coast of Japan today. This comes after the quake on June 1 which measured 4.6 on the Richter scale and happened only 3 km WSW of Asahi, Japan. Today's temblor at magnitude 5.8 was at a depth of 17.2 km and 79 km ESE of Ohara, Japan which is well off the coast. No damage and no injuries have been reported at this time, but the continued quake activity is certain to create some apprehension in the victims of last year's devastating quake and nuclear plant disasters. Fox News carried a banner for a bit, but has dropped all reference to the tremor at this time. In the reconstruction efforts to rebuild from last year's disaster, there have so far been 18 deaths of workers in the three prefectures which were hit the hardest, as reported at the Japan Times. It has been reported that the work conditions in the area have been plagued by unsafe practices and a shortage of workers to perform the work.
