John Edwards' attorneys argue aides wife's testimony is hearsay
Cheri Young the wife of Edwards' former aide Andrew Young, testified that Rielle Hunter, the former Senator's mistress was high maintenance and eccentric, calling a spiritual adviser to complain about a Reuben sandwich.
The defense attorneys for embattled former Senator John Edwards argued today that testimony from Cheri Young should be struck from the record because it is hearsay according to Fox News
. If the judge rules in their favor the jury in the Edwards trial would have to disregard much of Cheri Young's testimony.
The wife of Andrew Young, the former Presidential candidates aide, stated in her two days of testimony that Edwards had persuaded her husband to claim he was the father of his mistresses' baby, and that the Young's had allowed Rielle Hunter to stay with them in there North Carolina home.
According to Cheri Young once the baby was born she was off limits. "We were not allowed to touch the baby. My kids were not allowed anywhere they might breathe on the baby," Cheri Young testified. However that statement didn't hold up under cross examination where Cheri Young according to Fox News conceded that her children had held the baby girl once.
Its not the first time one of the Young's have given a bizarre account concerning their role in the John Edwards sex scandal. In his interview with ABC
the former Edwards' aide Andrew Young recounted how he was asked to get a dirty diaper of the infant child in an attempt to verify that she was in fact John Edwards daughter. "He asked me and Cheri to steal a diaper from the baby so he could secretly do a DNA test to find out if this was indeed his child." Also in the interview Andrew young stated that John Edwards wanted to find a doctor who would fake a DNA test in his favor.
In her testimony Cheri Young stated that Andrew and her had written out checks to Rielle Hunter including one for $8,000 which paid for the producer's spiritual adviser. Its this same spiritual adviser, Cheri says that Rielle called in order to complain about a Reuben sandwich which had the wrong the sauce.
According to Fox News Cheri Young went on to state the entire conspiracy to conceal the paternity of Hunter's baby took a toll on the family. "There was no returning to normal life at this point," said Young. "Our name was not cleared." Cheri went onto testify that her husbands devotion to John Edwards was problematic for their relationship however she soldiered on anyway. Stating under cross examination that she "made it okay."
According to Fox News, John Edwards' attorney tried to imply that Cheri's anger at Edwards for disrupting her life may cause the wife of his former aide to hold a vendetta against him. In court, Cheri Young seemed indignant, "Sir, that is a completely false statement," Young replied. "I'm here to tell the truth about my experiences, about my life."
Edwards' defense team went even further stating that Cheri's testimony was based on mostly secondhand accounts from her husband. However, the question brought out testimony from her which stated that she had heard phone conversations between her husband and Edwards, and that in one particular call she overheard John Edwards crying.
During Cheri Young's testimony according to Fox News the fact that she suffers from migraines which at times impedes her memory became an issue. Attorney Alan Duncan asked "Have you had problems with your memory over the last five years?" Cheri Young's answer drew snickers when she replied, "Not that I know of."
Alan Duncan also alleged that Young had co-authored her husband's book The Politician
. Cheri Young answered "I assure you I did not write one line of that book. I can assure you that I can not write."
