Op-Ed: Derrick Rose out for playoffs with torn ACL
2011 MVP Derrick Rose tore his ACL late in the 4th quarter of game 1 against the Sixers Saturday, and ESPN reports, he will be out for the rest of the playoffs.
The injury happened when with 1:22 left in the game, Rose attempted to leap off his left foot. It looked ugly and scary, but as he was helped off the court, I think all of us held onto some hope, that he'd be back for game 2.
This will likely change the whole landscape of the playoffs now. The Bulls are a deep team, and can probably get past the Sixers even without Rose, but this is just tragic.
The Bulls' 103-91 victory over the 76ers was overshadowed by Rose's injury. His teammates Joakim Noah and Carlos Boozer said they were praying for him, but everyone's fears were realized with the announcement that a torn left ACL would cut the 2011 MVP's season short, The Chicago Tribune
Before the injury, Rose had 23 points, nine rebounds, and nine assists, ESPN
Rose played for over 37 minutes Saturday, and many are wondering why as he wasn't 100% healthy. His teammate Taj Gibson said, "He wanted to be in the game." Gibson told The Chicago Tribune
. Carlos Boozer told the Tribune. "You have to talk to Thibs (Bulls' coach Tom Thibodeau) about that."
Joakim Noah wouldn't even reply to the question of whether Rose should have been out there.
Sixers forward Andre Iguodala told USA Today
that he understood why Rose was out there. "It's the playoffs. Some things happen at times. You can't fault a guy being in."
Sixers coach Doug Collins described the injury as "awful."
Bulls' coach Tom Thibodeau said, "it's part of the game. There are going to be injuries. You can get hurt anytime. You've got to deal with it. He's had a lot of injuries this year. It's unfortunate, but we'll deal with it."
"It's tough," Carlos Boozer told ESPN
. "It seems like he just can't catch a break. I feel for him, man. He really can't catch a break this season."
The Bulls seem determined to win in spite of the injury.
"We're a team, you know?" Joakim Noah told the Tribune.
. "We play tough basketball, good defense. Regardless of what happens, we're a capable group."
Rose was also scheduled to play for Team USA in London this summer.
Whether you're a Bulls fan or not, Saturday was a incredibly sad day for NBA fans.
Rose's teammates will have to keep him in their thoughts while doing everything they can to get past the Sixers. It won't be easy by any means, but maybe this will drive them more.
All in all, this was just the saddest way to start the playoffs Saturday.
