The Australian said Mugabe was undergoing intensive treatment in a hospital in Singapore. Some of his family members joined him Saturday. When Mugabe was admitted to hospital has not been announced.
There has been no official announcement of Mugabe’s illness, but the Zimbabwe Mail, reported his Zimbabwe African National Union (ZANU)-Patriotic Front (PF) party is pressing for early elections.
A cabinet meeting set for today has also been postponed, the Mail said.
The report added that ZANU-PF leaders are concerned that Mugabe might die in office and the party could fall apart or, far worse, the army could be tempted to seize power.
Another Southern African leader, Malawian President Bingu wa Mutharika, died in office last week, so the thought must be in the minds of ZANU-PF leaders.
President Mugabe has been accused of brutality and abuse of power, and is believed to be implicated in the Gukurahundi genocidal massacres in the 1980s, in which some 20,000 Ndebele people were reportedly murdered.
UPDATE
New Zimbabwe denies Mugabe's illness, quoting a member of the ZANU-PF Politburo saying the aged leader will be back at work Wednesday.
