Redford played Washington Post reporter Bob Woodward in the 1976 feature film depicting the Nixon era controversy.
According to
USA Today, Redford is now going behind the scenes to produce the new documentary that is to be aired on the Discovery channel.
The two hour documentary is set for release in January of 2013 and seeks to explore Watergate and its effects up until present day. Redford has reportedly met up with Watergate era journalists Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward, along with the Washington Post editor at the time, Ben Bradlee to discuss the film according to the New York times.
Bernstein and Woodward were credited with exposing the scandal and were portrayed by Redford and Dustin Hoffman.
Woodward reportedly said to the The NY Times, "What's the legacy of Watergate? What do we understand? What are some of the lessons? It's been a long time." Woodward has written multiple political books since co-investigating Watergate with Bernstein.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Redford will also be narrating the documentary as well as his role as executive producer, while documentarian Peter Schanll is heading the project.
The doc will also be a TV debut for Sundance Productions, which according to the Chicago Tribune, is also owned by Redford.
Redford was quoted, saying "It's the right time to take a look at this moment in history to inform the present."
